Scary. Sudden. Stressful. — I still remember how it all happened.
For the first time ever, I’ve experienced temporary hearing loss for 2 days. I was ignorant not to think about the fact that colds during air flight can cause ear barotrauma, damaged eardrum and temporary loss of hearing. During my 3 hour flight last Monday, the overpressure air in my inner ear didn’t escape through my Eaustachian tube. According to the doctor, the increase in air pressure pushes the eardrums inwards and in my case, I felt a sharp pain a few minutes before landing in BKK and because my eardrum was under constant pressure, I just couldn’t hear properly. It was really painful at first but for the most part, there was a deep discomfort having to wait not just for hours but actually for days before being able to hear normally again. I tried Valsava manoeuvre, yawning and swallowing, so as drinking water and chewing gum, but nothing worked.
So grateful that my Cherry Mobile family brought me to the ER of Bumrungrad International Hospital where the doctor said I had ear barotrauma and my eardrum was damaged – got a small hole or tear in my eardrum (also called perforated eardrum). As prescribed by the doctor, the medicines I took for days were Pseudoephedrine, Cetirizine + Phenylephrine, Paracetamol with Codeine and Fexofenadine.
Since it happened to me already, I know how it can be extremely annoying and I don’t want that to happen to any of my family, friends, followers and anyone in general. If only I could turn back time, I would have brought a decongestant nasal spray (Sodium Chloride Muconase) with me to temporarily dry up mucus in the nose and to open the Eustachian tube that’s blocked by mucus.
As an update, my hearing has come back completely in both ears but I hope my story serves as a warning not to treat colds lightly especially during a flight.
On a lighter note, here are some of the highlights from our 3-day Bangkok trip! Yep, I still managed to have fun despite what happened. 🙂
